In preparation for 2014’s Red Bull Music Academy (an applicant-only workshop/conference consisting of hand-selected musicians worldwide – this year hosted in Tokyo, Japan), Red Bull has set-up shop in the birthplace of Motown.

A lucky (and talented) group of 20 hand-picked applicants from the Midwest region will push their creative boundaries with the help from local and international music professionals during a series of workshops and conferences March 6-9. Red Bull Music Academy’s Base Camp Detroit weekend, which will be headquartered from Detroit’s legendary United Sound Systems studios, will also supply music events each night – spanning across the city of Detroit.

Thursday’s kick-off event will be hosted at Detroit’s Red Bull House of Art, and will feature performances by Academy team member Chairman Mao and a book signing by Grammy Award-winning composer, arranger and trombonist Paul Riser

On Friday, the Base Camp will officially open at United Sounds (5840 Second Avenue) with private studio and workshops sessions for participants. Following this event, Cliff Bell’s will host A Night of Improvised Round Robin Duets featuring performances by Michigan producer Todd Osborn, house and hip hop artist Dez Andres, soul veteran Amp Fiddler, Detroit hip hop legend Black Milk, Jim Diamond, Wendell Harrison, Vaughn Klugh, Marcus Belgrave, Joan Belgrave, Marion Hayden, JD Allen, James Carter, Eddie Fowlkes, Gayelynn McKinney and Phat Kat.

Saturday’s culmination of Red Bull Music Academy weekend in Detroit will bring a Deviation special with performances from Academy member Benji B, Platinum Pied Pipers’ WaajeedStones Throw’s associate DâM-Funk and Masters At Work‘s Kenny Dope at Detroit’s electronic staple – TV Bar.
