In celebration of Juan Atkins’ 35th anniversary of music making, the techno innovator has announced the release of a new Model 500 album, which will be available January 2015.
The nine-track album, titled Digital Solutions, will mark Atkins’ third Model 500 LP and his first in 16 years. Though Model 500 remained virtually passive for a decade, the alias was revisited in 2010 with OFI/Hueska (EP) and its follow-up EP Control.
Live interpretations of Model 500 have included Mike Banks, DJ Skurge and Mark Taylor, however the upcoming project has been deemed a solo project by Atkins. Digital Solutions will reportedly be released through Atkins’ own Metroplex label and feature guest production from Banks.
Juan Atkins is an original member of the “Belleville Three” (with Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson) and has been universally credited as the originator of techno music. The 52-year-old electronic innovator has been instrumental in creating techno’s “Detroit sound,” and introducing the genre internationally.
