Electric Forest Music Festival 2014 (Nick Kassab | Detroit Music Magazine)

This week, thousands of concert-goers will flock to the hallowed Double J Ranch in Rothbury, Michigan to celebrate a weekend of art and music. The Ranch will once again host Michigan’s largest music festival – Electric Forest.

This year’s event sold out in record time and looks to be the largest event to date, featuring hundreds of acts with an eclectic lineup catering to all tastes. Here are some of our favorite acts at Electric Forest this year. Artists from Detroit and Michigan are denoted with an asterisk (*).

Traverse City’s “The Accidentals” have been very busy the past three years – completing two albums with 50 original songs, scoring two movies, and playing hundreds of live shows. Be sure to catch one of their sets in the Forest this year, as their Alternative-indy-folk rock sound is sure to please the classic Rothbury crowd.

Sango*
Jubilee Stage
7:45 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Grand Rapid’s based producer Sango brings The Sound of Tomorrow to Rothbury this year. His beats range from hip-hop, to future r&b, soul and more to create his own distinct sound. As one of the hottest members of Soulection, we will definitely be at his set.

Flint Eastwood*
The Observatory
9:15 p.m. – 10:15 p.m.

Local favorites Flint Eastwood bring their western themed indy rock to Sherwood Forest this year. They have been quite busy, playing just about every local festival in Metro Detroit, and opening for the likes of Mayer Hawthorne, Andrew W.K., Big KRIT and more. This set is not to be missed, and will make you feel at home on the Double J Ranch.

Give it up for the curators and hosts of the festival, who play three sets over the weekend. Over the past 20 years they have established themselves as one of the hardest working independent bands in the world. Show thanks, have fun, and catch these masters at work playing at their favorite festival.

Steeped in years of tradition, stop by their set for a Detroit history lesson and high-brow, analog beats.

Freddy Todd*
Forest Stage
10:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.

Michigan native Freddy Todd cannot be pinned down to one genre. Lazercrunk, psychedelic bass, future start to describe his sound, but if you have not seen him before you need to hear it for yourself. This will absolutely be one of the funkiest dance parties on the Forest stage all weekend.

Ann Arbor favorites Gosh Pith have taken metro Detroit by storm this past year with original music and shows galore. A late addition to the Forest lineup, we are beyond thrilled to watch their rise. Catch their set this year while you can, because next year you’ll have to catch them on national tour.

Jonah Baseball*
Silent Disco
12:45 a.m. – 1:45 a.m.

Ann Arbor via east coast, Jonah Baseball has adopted Michigan as his temporary home. We are also very excited to see what the future brings this young man, as one of the most talented and unique artists on the lineup. A great way to close out the festival, be sure to stop by this party rocking set. It will be anything but silent.

(Special Mention: Super Tall Paul… find him in the forest. Trust us, you do not want to go the whole weekend without seeing Super Tall Paul. He will be there every day and night.)
