Detroit rapper Eminem once famously used an interpretation of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” for the chorus of his track “Sing for the Moment,” but on Sunday he made a terminally ill teenager’s dream come true, and this time it was with relatively little fanfare.
Seventeen-year-old Gage Garmo, a student at Rochester High School, has fought Osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer four times and won, even losing a leg in the process; however, his fifth bout with the illness has left him with just one week to live.
On Friday, Garmo’s friends and family took to social media with the hashtag #GetGageGarmoToMeetEminem in an effort to connect the young superfan with his musical idol. The campaign spread like wildfire and reached the rapper, who arranged for a visit.
According to reports, Eminem quietly arrived at Garmo’s home in Rochester around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, where the two spend about an hour together. It’s a testament to the power of social media and an act of good will from the often controversial rapper.
