High Tech Soul: The Creation of Techno Music, a documentary filmed in 2006, has long been an important document in archiving the history of Detroit’s role in shaping the genre’s legacy but fell out of print quickly after its release. Now the film has been reissued on DVD, giving fans an opportunity to hear firsthand the story of one of electronic music’s most significant movements, straight from the creators themselves.

The documentary chronicles the development of the genre from the Motor City’s race riots of 1967 through its underground party circuit of the late ’80s as well as its leap across the pond to Europe and popularity with later generations. There are in-depth interviews with the style’s originators — Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson — as well as accounts from Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Eddie Fowlkes, Kenny Larkin, Matthew Dear, and more.

As an added bonus, the DVD extras include a “Trash” section in which the Detroit icons take the piss out of their peers, such as Moby and Paul Oakenfold. You can order the DVD now over at Boomkat and watch the original trailer below.
